SORN and Scrappage - What’s the Deal?

The greal idea behind the government’s scrappage scheme is that it takes older models off the road, replacing them with newer, more environmentally friendly and fuel efficent cars. Not a bad idea, and one that can get you a £2000 bonus should you have a qualifying old car to trade up.

However the government already has a way for us to keep old, inefficient cars off the road when we don’t drive them any more - the Statutory Off Road Notification or ‘SORN’ for short. So what’s the deal if you have a car that’s been SORN’d but want to apply it towards a brand new car and get your scrappage bonus? Well it’s not good news, but it’s not all bad news!

The Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS for short) has a handy set of Frequently Asked Questions about the Scrappage Scheme. Some of these outline what happens when you have a car that’s under a SORN that you’d like to get a scrappage bonus with.

In summary, a car that is currently under a SORN is not eligible for the scrappage scheme, as the scheme was designed to take old cars off the road, and a car with a SORN is already off the road! This simple statement pretty much puts a stop to any plans you may have to take a SORN’d car and use it to get the scrappage bonus.. or does it?

The FAQ goes on to state that: “Yes, you have the option of getting it taxed, MOT’d and insured in order to qualify [for scrappage]“. So good news at last! A SORN’d car cannot be used, but a car can be put back on the road and then used for scrappage. Of course the cost of getting your SORN’d car back on the road between road tax, insurance and MOT might well out-weigh the benefits of the scrappage bonus itself - so make sure you do the calculations before you go through all that time and effort. These days there are plenty of new car deals out there that still give you huge discounts even without the scrappage bonus, so it’s worth doing some checks first.
