With the new scrappage scheme about to come into force, the question on everyone’s lips is ‘can I scrap my old car to get money off a new one?’ The incentive to trade in your old petrol guzzler for a new, efficient, more environmentally friendly model is huge - and at a time when everyone is trying to save money it’s worth checking out. Especially with another 2p increase on fuel duty!

The basic criteria for getting the £2000 contribution towards a new car are as follows:

  1. The car you scrap must be over ten years old.
  2. You must be the DVLA registered owner of the car for over a year.
  3. The car you buy must be registered in the UK.
  4. The scrappage contribution must be taken before March 2010.. so get moving!

Talk with your local dealer or car maker to find out what scrappage deals they are offering. Some manufacturers were already offering scrappage schemes before the government introduced their own time limited version.
