The BBC today reported that the scrapapge scheme introduced on May 19th in the UK has had a “positive impact” on the rate of new car sales in the UK according to the (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMTT). This is great news for the British motor industry as a whole, as well as great for consumers saving their £2000 from the scrappage bonus.
In figures released by the SMTT the sales of new cars has only dropped 15.7% in June this year, as compared to a 25% drop in June 2008. 176,264 new cars were sold in the entire month - although the figures don’t say how many of these cars were sold saving their new owners money through the scrappage scheme.
In the same article the most popular cars being sold were listed as:
- Ford Fiesta
- Ford Focus
- Vauxhall Corsa
- Vauxhall Astra
- Peugeot 207
- Mini
- Volkswagen Golf
- Ford Mondeo
- Vauxhall Insignia
- BMW 3 Series
One issue some car dealers and industry officials have raised is surprise that the government has not included an emissions angle on the scrappage scheme. Of course as new car buyers this means it’s up to us to choose cars that are green and good for the environment, as well as good for our wallets.
