UK Scrappage Scheme Now Halfway Done

New figures released today show that over 155,000 new cars have been ordered through the scrappage scheme in the UK. This is a highly impressive number, but perhaps more importantly, it means that half of the money put aside by the government for the scrappage rebate has now gone - in under one third of a year.
This spells great news for the economy of British car vendors, as the scheme has led to an increase in sales of cars across the country, although mostly in south east England. It also spells great news for those people who’ve already saved £2000 on a brand new car and in some cases even more as many manufacturers have given extra money off with their own new car deals.
Of course if half the money has gone, that means there is less and less money for those of us who’ve yet to invest in a new car. Should this trend continue, then the money will likely run out before the end of this year unless the government extends their allocation pot.

Ford have a great set of scrappage deals on their new Ford Focus range.

The Ford Focus is one of the most popular cars in Britain - selling over 100,000 in 2008. Of course 2008 was before the UK government introduced the scrappage scheme, giving at least £2000 off a new car so we can only expect the Ford Focus to be even more popular this year - especially as Ford is offering a top-up to the scrappage bonus, making a grand total of £4000 off a new Ford Focus Style!

What is the Scrappage Scheme?

‘Scrappage‘ is a scheme run by the UK government and car dealers where you get paid money (£2000 or more) to scrap your old vehicle (cars & vans) when you buy a new one. It’s like a trade in, except with a trade in your dealer will only give you money for cars they can re-sell. With this scrap scheme the vehicle you ‘trade in’ will be broken down for scrap, with the goal of removing environmentally unfriendly vehicles from British roads.
How can I get this money?
Your old vehicle has to meet some very specific rules defined by the DVLA to qualify for the free money, most importantly it has to be over 10 years old and have been registered in the UK under your name for the last 12 months. Read here for a full list of the DVLA scrappage rules. Additionally, not all car dealers support the scheme - so make sure you check with your local dealer before you make a purchase!
For more information on scrapage and how you can use your old vehicle to get free money off a new one please read the rest of our site. Or if you have any handy hints of your own please feel free to write a comment. Have fun finding your new car!
