The BBC reports that car sales were up 57.6% this November, compared with figures a year earlier. Although this rise needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, as this time last year the recession was just kicking in, it is great news for car makers and sellers across the country. The UK car scrappage scheme is considered largely to thank for this up-turn.

According to the SMMT (the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders) 158,082 cars were registered last month. “The increase in new car registrations in November reflects the positive impact of the scrappage incentive scheme, customers avoiding the VAT increase in January and the very difficult conditions we experienced a year ago,” said Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT. Given that the UK vehicle scrappage incentive has been extended to cover another 100,000 cars and will run into March 2010 - when it currently ends, so motorists interested in taking advantage of this cashback incentive need to get moving fast!

Scrappage to Run Longer Due to Double Counting?

Reports suggest that the government is being forced to re-evaluate the actual numbers of cars sold through the scrappage scheme after double counting! The government’s database is currently going through data cleansing activities after officials found cars being tallied for no reason.

Some of the erroneous counts include; counting people who only enquired about trading in their old car for the scrappage cash, counting people who traded in their car with the scrappage scheme and then upgraded their new car before receiving it and people who wanted to get the scrappage deal but whose car turned out not to be valid. Once these erroneous people are removed from the government’s database they will know for real how much of the scrappage money budget is left - which will likely mean the scheme will continue until nearer its final drop dead date of February 2010 as more money is available.

Of course, maybe if the government had put proper systems in place before the scheme started then they wouldn’t have to waste money now fixing their database.. Then there would be even more scrappage cash available for everyone.

The Guardian reports this morning that new car sales have jumped by one third in the last month, attributable to the UK scrappage scheme. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) a total of almost 170,000 new cars were registered in October, an increase of 31.6% from last year. This is further great news about how the scrappage bonus of £2000 on a new car is helping boost the UK economy.

Which magazine reports that not only have the goverment extended the amount of money available for the UK Scrappage Scheme (now a total of £4 million from the government) but they’ve also relaxed the scrappage rules for van drivers and updated the qualifying date for cars.

The amended rules still require your old car to be over 10 years old, but now the car must be registered on or before 28 February 2000 instead of July 1999. Lucky van drivers only need to have a qualifying van that is over eight (8) years old! So now any van registered on or before 28th February 2002 qualifies for the amended scheme. Great news for that (slightly less) old clunker you have sitting in your drive.

Exciting news today for those of you who have yet to take advantage of the UK car scrappage scheme. The government has announced today that they are extending the scheme from £300 million to £400million - that’s an extra 100,000 cars that can be scrapped under the scheme.

This is very good news indeed, as the huge success of the scheme has meant that to date 227,750 new cars have been ordered - each receiving at least the £2000 scrappage cash. The original scheme meant that only another 70,000 cars would be eligible before the money ran out - but now another 170,000 cars can be submitted under the scheme.

However, it’s not all good news. The scheme is still presently only running until February 2010, however many cars are scrapped. So you only have five months left to take advantage of this huge cash incentive to scrap your old car.
